This fact was proved last Saturday morning as more than 29 million Americans tuned in to watch the Royal Nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. In comparison, the audience number was at 23 million when Prince William wed Kate Middleton wed back in 2011.
In addition to leaving his elder brother behind in absolute numbers, Prince Harry took the lead over Prince Willian in household numbers as well. His wedding attracted 23.7 million households in America – compared to the 18.6 million which were attracted to William and Kate’s wedding in 2011.
The Royal Wedding not only dominated American television networks but it also ruled the roost on social media. Around 6.9 million interactions were carried out on Facebook and Twitter about the incoming Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
Of the major networks that were broadcasting the wedding live in the US, the NBC owned ABC and CBS drew an audience of 17.6 million between 6 AM and 9 AM EST. The Comcast-owned network, meanwhile, finished second with 6.4 million viewers, with Disney-owned networks finishing third with an audience of 6.34 million viewers.
As for the cable networks, Fox News was a clear winner as 2.036 million people tuned in to the Rupert Murdoch-owned network to watch the Royal nuptials.
Prince Harry and American-born former Hollywood actress Meghan Markle tied the knot in a ceremony at the Windsor Castle, where more than 100,000 people lined the streets to greet them.
The guest celebrities that were invited to the Royal Wedding included David and Victoria Beckham, Oprah Winfrey, George and Amal Clooney, Idris Elba, Serena Williams, James Corden, and Markle’s co-stars from ‘’Suits’’.
The wedding also included a ‘’power of love’’ sermon from Bishop Michael Curry and a dazzling ‘’Stand By Me’’ performance by Karen Gibson and the Kingdom Choir.
The couple won’t be taking off for a honeymoon yet, as they are going to attend a charity garden party by Prince Charles, heir to the throne, on Tuesday evening at the Buckingham Palace.

And now that it involves an American actress, major networks have gone into overdrive to create huge marketing and programming opportunities for the American media.
So overhyped is the Royal Wedding that ‘’Today”, a morning television which is on-air on NBC since 1952, has announced it will be showing nothing but the Royal Wedding all week.
‘’Today’’ is not the only show which aims to cash-in on the popularity of the Royal Wedding among the American public. Nearly all major news channels, as well as newspapers, are sending their best anchors to the Windsor Castle in an effort to capture the tradition that will be on display on May 19th.
As for lifestyle and entertainment networks, they have recorded specials such as ‘’A Royal Romance’’ and ‘’An American princess’’ to lure the audiences to their television screens. Like their news-showing counterparts, these networks will also be showing live coverage of the big day on Saturday.
While the nationality of Meghan has also played its part to increase the appeal of the already over-hyped Royal Wedding, it’s her background which has made the wedding a bonanza for the American media. For, Meghan is a biracial, divorced woman whose wedding with Prince Harry simply would not have been possible a few decades ago.
Therefore, the welcome which the Royal family has given to her by giving the man who is sixth in line to the throne is a bellwether sign of how the modern-day monarchy has evolved. And for the American public which has grown fed-up of almost daily scandals coming out of Washington, the Royal Wedding serves as a brilliant distraction.
In addition to NBC, TLC is also banking on the Royal Wedding to set straight its audience numbers. It will be airing three hours of documentaries on Friday Night – “Secrets of the Royal Wedding,” “Meghan Markle: A Royal Love Story,” and “Prince Harry: Wild No More.”
Then, after capturing the main event live on Saturday from 5 a.m. – 9 a.m. ET, it will be airing a recap special late Saturday night with a panel of style and wedding experts invited from its other shows.
Still, while networks have been planning for months on how to cover the wedding, a certain amount of unpredictability which always surrounds a live event is related to the Royal Wedding as well. That unpredictability, in turn, might increase the appeal of the occasion for the viewers.

Wedding planning company Bridebook, after calculating the money that would be spent on food, entertainment, bride’s dress, and flowers, have estimated that the Royal Wedding would cost the British exchequer a staggering £32million.
If that wasn’t enough to antagonize the British taxpayer, here’s another fact. Bridebook has also estimated that if their estimate proves to be true, the Royal Wedding would earn a place on the list of top ten most expensive weddings ever, replacing Kate and William’s wedding which cost £20million.
With nearly a million pounds to be spent on Meghan’s dress, food, drinks, and the flowers – experts say the bulk of the money will be spent on the security of guests which will attend the wedding. That, despite the fact that Kensington Palace hasn’t invited any Head of State to the wedding.
Other areas where the money will be spent includes the Windsor Castle, as it will be locked down for the whole day with a heavy contingent of police put in place. Some money, however, will also be spent to control the crowd and to place restrictions on restaurants and shops.
The security measures that will be put in place to ensure the safety of guests include undercover military tech, undercover police, snipers, and counter-drone systems. Bridebook estimates that it is these extra security measures which might take the cost north of £30million.
In case you are wondering, the security bill of Harry and Meghan’s wedding will be more than that of Kate and William’s. That is, because, the terrorist level which exists today wasn’t the same during the last Royal Wedding.

The strange ‘’request’’ from Meghan Markle’s Brother – which has popped up just a fortnight before the Royal Wedding – has come in the form of an open letter to Prince Harry.
In an extremely strange turn of events, Meghan Markle’s stepbrother has written an open letter to Prince Harry asking him to call off the Royal Wedding.
Thomas Markle Jr., the estranged step-brother of Meghan Markle, has told Prince Harry that ‘’it’s not too late’’ to call off the engagement. This letter has come just a fortnight before the May 19th Royal Wedding.
In the letter – which Thomas Markle has addressed directly to Prince Harry – Meghan Markle has been called as a ‘’ “jaded, shallow, conceited woman’’. It further warns Prince Harry that Meghan Markle ‘’will make a joke of you the royal family heritage”.
Published by In Touch magazine, the letter also says: ‘’ “As more time passes to your royal wedding, it became very clear that this is the biggest mistake in royal wedding history.’’
“Meghan Markle is obviously not the right woman for you. I’m confused why you don’t see the real Meghan that the whole world now sees.’’
If that wasn’t enough to sully the reputation of his sister, Thomas then goes on to launch a scathing attack on the upcoming member of the Royal Family by calling her a ‘’below C average Hollywood actress’’ who is merely attempting to ‘’act the part of a princess’’.
In the handwritten letter, Thomas Markle blames his sister and their father for financially jeopardizing him. He alleges that it was him who funded Markle’s dream of becoming an actress and that his decision to fund her dream has caused Thomas to struggle ‘’to this day’’.
He continued: ‘’ “What kind of person starts out by using her own father until he’s bankrupt, then forgets about him in Mexico leaving him broke, over mostly all her debts, And when it’s time to pay him back she forgets her own father like she never knew him.’’
The letter concludes with a somber tone: ‘’ “Meghan is still my sister. She is family. So whatever happens is up to her, whether she wants to forget knowing me or the rest of her family, family comes first.’’
It is not the first time that Mr. Markle has hit out at her half-sister. He slammed Ms. Markle a few months ago as well for having ‘’forgotten her roots’’ and forgetting his family. The half-siblings haven’t seen each other since 2011 when they met at the funeral of their grandmother, Doris.

This much has been revealed by Katie Nicholl, the Royal expert who wrote a book on Prince Harry titled ‘’Harry: Life, Loss, and Love’’.
Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight that Prince Harry told her about the first time he met with Meghan Markle.
She claims that when he first walked into the room where Meghan was already sitting, Harry said he knew had to ‘’up his game’’ to match her.
Nicholl further states that while the beauty of the glamorous actress was one reason why Harry fell in love with her, she feels it was a superficial initial connection which fortified their relationship.
So much so, that after the first couple of dates, Nicholl was told that Harry believed that he had met someone ‘’very, very special’’.
Judging from the words of Nicholl, it seems we’re are not the only ones who are having a crush on Meghan Markel. For, she has the charm which could even make the royalty weak in their knees.
And while we don’t know what is it that Harry did to ‘’up his game’’, it must have been perfect considering the that he is going to marry Meghan in two months’ time.
What’s more, while the pair has revealed the first time they met, they have refused to share the details of the meeting. What they have revealed is the fact they knew very little about the other before their first date.
As for Nicholl, she claims that while many persons could be credited for the relationship of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, one London socialite deserves a special mention.
Violet von Westenholz, an old friend of Harry, had just become friends with Meghan when he gave him her number, claims Nicholl.

If you were thinking that she didn’t behave royally in her daily life, now you should. For, in an apparent effort to distance herself from the masses, Price Harry’s Fiancée has deleted her Social Media accounts.
The new fiancée of Prince Harry, Meghan Markle, has deleted her Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram accounts, a statement from Kensington Palace confirmed yesterday.
To comfort her followers, the statement from the palace said that the former actress “was grateful” to her followers on the social media accounts. The statement further claimed that the reason she chose to shut down her accounts was that she hadn’t used them for quite some time.
This decision to shut down her social media accounts is in line with the Royal status which she is going to enjoy from May 2018 – as she’s going to marry Prince Harry that month.
Her decision, however, doesn’t mean that the members of the monarchy are not allowed to have Twitter and Instagram accounts. In contrast, most senior members DO have their official accounts which are run by their social media teams.
That said, the royal accounts aren’t normally seen posting personal posts or tweets. There is one exception, however, as the Duke of York is a vocal personality on Twitter. In Tweets which personally come from his side, he signs them with his initials “AY”.
After her wedding in May, Markle’s statements will be posted by Kensington Palace – whereas her communications on social media will be made by the palace’s Communications staff on her behalf.
In December last year, the US-born actress had 1.9 million followers on Instagram, whereas more than 350,000 people followed her Tweets on Twitter. Her Facebook account, meanwhile, had more than 800,000 likes.
It is not the first time that Meghan had decided to take a break from public life. In April 2017, for instance, she stunned her followers by shutting down The Tig – her lifestyle website.
