The Oscars might be the most prestigious awards in the film industry. But over the course of history, some ridiculous movies were nominated for them. Worse, some of those stinkers were actually able to win Oscars as well.
The whole world looks to the Oscars when deciding whether a movie is worth watching or not. A classic status is instantly enshrined upon a movie after it has won one. Despite being so much importance attached to them, the Oscars have rewarded some stinkers over the years. The purpose of this article is to shed light on some of them.
Harry and the Hendersons (1987)
Won: Best Makeup
Here’s the plot of this movie, provided you have the stomach to call it that. A happy family, during their trip through a jungle, mistakenly run over a Bigfoot esque creature. Out of sympathy, the family brings it home. Once there, the creature gets back to life and starts loving a happy life, with the family. The movie is a stinker and torture to watch but somehow, it managed to bag the Oscar for Best Makeup.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Won: Best Makeup
Ever seen a movie which was as incomprehensible and constructed a superhero as bad as the Suicide Squad? Nope, me neither. The film was so bad that even Forbes, a magazine which mostly reserves it to deal with the financial side of things, ended up writing an article about how bad it was. However, as the Best Makeup Oscar which this movie got tells us, maybe the jury didn’t read that article.
Les Miserables (2012)
Won: Best Supporting Actress, Best Makeup, and Hairstyling, Best Sound Mixing
The clue lies in the title of the movie: miserable. Anna Hathaway, who won the best-supporting-actress award, was way too emotional and over-weepy with her performance. As for the sound mixing, the movie had too many songs with even Russel Crowe singing a song. What could be worse than this!
Crash (2004)
Awards Won: Best Original Screenplay, Best Picture, Best Film Editing
Despite being named as the ‘’worst move of the decade’’, this movie bagged not one but three Oscars. Apart from its star-studded cast and an inherent social message, this movie was abysmal. Though its topic was good (racism), the delivery was abysmal. Look, all of us know that racism is bad, that we shouldn’t indulge in it. The problem is that the movie told us everything which we already know.
The Wolfman (2010)
Award Won: Best Makeup
If there is one thing that hasn’t changed in the Oscar Jury over the last three decades, it is their love for the Bigfoot. Just like the abovementioned ‘Harry and the Hendersons’, it was the makeup of the Bigfoot which once again did the trick.
